(St. Leon, Ind.) – A beloved Sunman-Dearborn Middle School teacher has died.
Janie McFarland had been fighting against an ovarian cancer diagnosis since October of 2014. She passed away on Thursday, January 18. The Guilford resident was 43.
“Janie’s loss if very unfortunate,” principal Matt Maple said Monday. “Janie was a fighter. Janie was a fantastic teacher who greatly cared about her students and staff, and she was an even better person. S-DMS students and staff will greatly miss Janie’s teaching expertise, but more importantly miss her as a person. Janie is the face of hard-work and determination.”
McFarland was a 7th grade science teacher at the middle school in St. Leon. Last year, students and staff rallied to show support for McFarland with a week of festivities, including a school-wide program which Eagle Country 99.3 covered.
Maple said additional counseling is being made to students and staff. There are also preparations for an appropriate memorial in the next few weeks.
Janie is survived by her husband Jason and two daughters, as well as her mother, sister, brother, grandfather, cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
The McFarland family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society.
Services will be held Tuesday, January 23 starting at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church of All Saints Parish in St. Leon.
