Teacher Assessments Released By Ind. DOE

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – For the first time ever, there is public data from the Indiana Department of Education detailing just how good – or bad – teachers are on a school level.

The IDOE released its first education effectiveness data for the 2012-2013 school year on Monday.

The report shows that 87 percent of Indiana’s teachers were rated as either effective or highly effective last year. Three percent were rated as ineffective or needing improvement. Ten percent were not evaluated due to resignations or retirements.

TEACHER RATINGS FOR LOCAL SCHOOLS ARE SHOWN IN THE CHARTS BELOW.

Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz said the new data confirms what the IDOE already knew, that public schools are filled with good teachers.

“Research shows that highly effective educators are exactly the type of leaders that can turn schools around and increase school performance,” Ritz said.

“However, they also show us where we can improve.  For example, when comparing the data by school performance grades A to F, there is an increase in the percentage of educators who fall within the improvement necessary and ineffective categories and the percentage that do not receive a final rating, indicating a retention concern in our lower performing schools.

Ritz said there is a marked decrease in the percentage of highly effective teachers between schools that are graded by the state as an A and those graded F. She said 32 percent of teachers in A schools are rated as highly effective, in comparison to just 11 percent in schools that received an F.

“Highly effective educators are vital to school turnaround and my Department will be working to address this gap moving forward,” said Ritz.
