Two Arrested For Scrap Theft
(Harrison, Oh.) – Hamilton County Sheriff’s detectives say tips from the public helped identify two suspects who took thousands of dollars in scrap metal and equipment from a local business.
Santana Jones, 40, of Whitewater Township, and Ryan Gerhardt, 21, of Cleves, are each charged with receiving stolen property and breaking and entering, both felonies. They were arrested Monday at their homes.
The men are accused of breaking into William Kramer & Son on Harrison Avenue the night of May 4. They allegedly cut barbed wire fence and climbed over.
Once inside the property, the two began ransacking the business. They removed 1,100 pounds of copper sheeting and high-end tools then loaded them into a truck owned by William Kramer & Sons.
The truck was then used to pull down two fences surrounding the property as the burglars drove off. The stolen truck was later found at Mt. Nebo and Lawrenceburg roads with damage done to it during the theft. The metal and tools it was used to haul was gone.
Following the break-in, Hamilton County Sheriff’s investigators sent surveillance images to local media. The resulted in several tips identifying Jones and Gerhardt.
Jones and Gerhardt then scrapped the copper sheeting at E-Town Recycling in Elizabethtown. Police say Jones turned in 578 pounds and Gerhardt 522 pounds.
The copper sheets, valued at $7,007, had already been destroyed and could not be recovered. The tools valued at $10,840 have not been recovered either, as of Tuesday.
The estimated cost of the property damage done at William Kramer & Son was approximately $10,561.
Anyone with additional information regarding this offense and/or the location of the stolen property is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (513) 825-1500 or Crimestoppers at (513) 352-3040.
