(Switzerland County, Ind.) – Two people were flown to the hospital after a vehicle crashed into a creek and caught fire in Switzerland County.

A vehicle ran off a bridge on State Road 56 just west of Lamb on Tuesday morning, according to Switzerland County Sheriff’s Sgt. John Mills.

Photos of the crash shared by Jeff-Craig Fire Department show the vehicle at a rest upside down in a creek bed below the bridge. The vehicle was on fire when first responders began to arrive.

Two people who were in the vehicle had managed to exit on their own. They were in the creek bed about 500 feet from the flaming vehicle, according to the fire department.

Mills says each of the crash victims were flown to the hospital. Their names and the extend of their injuries have not been released.

State Road 56 was closed during the crash response. The highway has been reopened, but deputies said it will likely need to be closed once again later Tuesday morning when crews begin to remove the burned vehicle.
