(West Harrison, Ind.) – Seconds mattered as Franklin County first responders pulled a crash victim from a wrecked vehicle before it was engulfed by flames.

Deputies were dispatched to a report of an accident with injuries on Johnson Fork Road, about a ½ mile north of the Franklin-Dearborn county line at about 10:47 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.

The driver, Kyle P. Manis, Jr., was lying unconscious behind the wheel when police and firefighters arrived to pull him from the wreckage of a Chevrolet Trail Blazer. Soon, flames consumed the SUV.

Manis, 26, of Cedar Grove, told deputies that he was traveling northbound on Johnson Fork Road when he struck a deer. The collision caused his vehicle to travel off of the roadway before striking a tree.

The victim was flown by Air Care to University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Drewersburg Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the flames. Responder 24 and Drewersburg EMS 1 assisted at the scene.
