Original story posted Friday, April 20 at 10:32 a.m.:

(Aurora, Ind.) – When Renee Carpenter went to her friend’s apartment on April 14 she was expecting to help him, not be beaten, strangled, and robbed.

Aurora Police are currently searching for that friend, Michael D. Abbot, 34, of Aurora. A warrant has been issued for his arrest on charges of Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Robbery with a Deadly Weapon, and Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.

Carpenter, 23, went to the Aurora Police Department to report the attack that had occurred minutes earlier that Saturday afternoon.

The victim claims Abbott asked her to come to his apartment at 303 B Exporting Street. She recalled being strangled to the point of unconsciousness by Abbott during the alleged attack. When she awoke, Abbot was banging her head on the floor.

Abbott had a hammer in his hand and threatened Carpenter with it while begging her not to call police, she said. She had suffered injuries to her head, eyes, and face.

Abbott had also allegedly stolen a large sum of cash from Carpenter during the attack.

At some point, Carpenter was able to get away  and make it to the Aurora Police Department three blocks away to report what had happened. She was treated for her injuries at Dearborn County Hospital.

“Ms. Carpenter did not deserve this attack that was perpetrated against her. She went to assist a person in a time of need and she was attacked and robbed for it,” said Aurora Chief of Police Bryan Fields.

Abbot fled the scene and remains at-large. He is described as a white male, age 34, standing approximately 5’10” tall, weighing 160 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes. There are distinguishing tattoos – a castle and a sun on his right arm and tattoo of a moon on his left arm.

Anyone with information on Abbott’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Aurora Police Department at (812) 926-1101.

“Officer (Clint) Holmstrom did an outstanding investigation and as result, this person will be held accountable for his actions,” Fields said.

This is not Abbott’s first encounter with the law. He was accused of stealing money from a mixed martial arts event to benefit veterans in 2010.
