(Fayette County, Ind.) – A Brookville man died in a Fourth of July high-speed crash on State Road 1 in Fayette County.

Jonathan Green, 24, was attempting to pass a vehicle on SR 1 at Big Bear Road about 5:36 p.m. Friday when his Acura went off the road, according to the Brookville American-Democrat newspaper. In speaking with witnesses, police said Green’s vehicle was doing anywhere from 100 to 120 MPH at the time.

The vehicle rolled several times and came to a rest upside down. Green had to be extricated by firefighters. A passenger in the vehicle, 25-year-old William Shoemaker, was able to escape the wreckage and was walking around when officers arrived.

Green was flown to University of Cincinnati Medical Center where he later died.

Shoemaker was taken to Fayette Regional Health System in Connersville for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Shoemaker told the investigating officer that Green was travelling southbound on SR 1 and crossed into the northbound lanes as Green attempted to pass a vehicle driving recklessly. That’s when a northbound vehicle appeared. Green tried to get back into the southbound lane, but over corrected, causing him to lose control.

Another witness, a woman driving the northbound vehicle, told officers she saw Green’s vehicle travelling in the wrong lane at a high rate of speed.
