(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – A man is accused of stealing a military veteran’s ribbons during a vehicle break-in while the vet was at work.

Lawrenceburg Police say an Indiana Gaming Commission Agent at Hollywood Casino was the victim of a vehicle break-in on Monday morning, just a day before Veterans Day. The agent is an Army veteran. Among the items taken from his vehicle was a ribbon board containing military awards, commendations, and engagements.

Investigators were able to quickly identify the suspect using surveillance video. One agent recognized the suspect as a frequent casino guest – Lawrenceburg resident Rusty L. Mitchell.

Lawrenceburg Police located the stolen property including the ribbons in a dumpster near Mitchell’s home not far from the casino. They were returned to their rightful owner.

Mitchell, 53, remains in jail at the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center as of Thursday. He is charged with Theft with a Prior Conviction (level 6 felony), Theft (class A misdemeanor), and Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle (class B misdemeanor).

Mitchell could make his first court appearance on Thursday.

There are three past convictions for Mitchell, all of them in Dearborn County. He was convicted of Fraud (class D felony) in 2012, Burglary (class C felony) in 2000, and Trespassing (class A misdemeanor).

First of all, I thank the gaming agent for his service to our country. Mr. Mitchell, well obviously he is a piece of trash, and should be treated as such. Where is the “hard labor” in prison when you need it?
