(Indianapolis, Ind.) – It appears to be a good possibility that Indiana’s next state Supreme Court justice could be a female.

The Associated Press reports more than 70 percent of the applicants to fill the upcoming vacancy by outgoing Justice Frank Sullivan are females. Of the 22 applications, 16 were sent by females.

Indiana’s Supreme Court is currently all-male. Only one female has ever sat on the panel: Myra Selby who served 1994-1999.

Governor Mitch Daniels will name the new justice from one of three finalists chosen by the Indiana Judicial Nomination Commission. The commission will consider applicants’ legal education, legal writings, reputation in the practice of law, physical condition, financial interests, activities in public service and any other pertinent information.

The 22 applicants will be interviewed by the commission on July 17 and 18.

Sullivan announced in April he is leaving the court to become a law professor at Indiana University.
