Brett Young has ties to NBC's "The Voice."

He tells "Variety" he had an invitation to compete on the show, but he turned it down.

Young says he met up with his mentor two days before he was set to board a pane to L.A. to start the show, but his mentor advised him against it.

It's a good thing, too, because less than a month later, Young signed a record deal with Big Machine Label Group and went on to release two #1 singles shortly afterward.
