Alleged Thief Takes Ring, More From Councilman

Tyler Woolpert

Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center

(Greendale, Ind.) – Allegedly stealing a Greendale city councilman’s wedding ring, watch, and other items has landed a man in jail.

Tyler C. Woolpert, 21, of Greendale, was arrested Tuesday, August 28 on a warrant from Receiving Stolen Property (Class D felony).

On June 28, Greendale Police were called to investigate the theft. Greendale City Councilman Al Abdon told an officer that he had been parked outside the Half Moon Saloon on Ridge Avenue, officers stated in a court affidavit. Later in the evening, Abdon noticed that an envelope containing $65 cash and several raffle rickets was missing from his driver side door. Also, a cell phone belonging to Abdon’s son was taken from the glove compartment.

The next afternoon, Abdon reported that his diamond wedding ring and a silver watch had been stolen from the car, too.

Greendale Police officers contacted local pawn shops and gold dealers in search of the stolen jewelry. One store reported that a man identified as “Tyler” had come in attempting to sell a wedding ring matching the description. Surveillance video showed the man was Woolpert, who police recognized from prior contact.

Another gold store in Aurora contacted Greendale Police to report it had purchased the stolen ring from a man who signed the receipt as “Tylor Brown.” A look at the surveillance video allowed officers to again determine it was Tyler Woolpert.

On July 9, officers went to speak with Woolpert. He advised that he had found the ring on the sidewalk in front of the bar on Ridge Avenue. Woolpert denied having any knowledge of the other items taken from the vehicle.

Woolpert remains in jail at the Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center as of Thursday morning. He is held on $500 cash bond.
