(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Dearborn Community Foundation (DCF), Inc. recently awarded a $1,000 Proactive Grant to the Dearborn County Jail Chemical Addiction Program (JCAP), which uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Substance Abuse Counseling to combat the “revolving door” of people in acute active addiction.

In its 25th year of helping donors make a difference, DCF is awarding 15 proactive grants of $1,000 each throughout 2023 to charitable organizations that serve Dearborn County residents. Each of the Foundation’s 15 volunteer Board members is recommending a grant. The money comes from the Foundation’s Unrestricted Endowment Funds, established by donors to provide flexibility to address changing needs in the community over the years.

DCF Board member Ed Gordon said he recommended the grant for JCAP because of the program's continued success. The program depends on grants and probation user fees with little to no use of county tax dollars.

"I recommended JCAP for my grant after reading about the good work the program is doing, and how much funding is needed to keep it going," said Gordon. "People aren't all bad, and sometimes get stuck in a situation, and need some help to get going again. That is what I feel the JCAP program is doing."

DCF has provided other significant grant funding through the years to support JCAP, including help to fund a study by Indiana University. Through the collaborative research initiative published in 2015, IU found JCAP highly effective in addressing substance abuse and community safety.

Most crimes in Southeastern Indiana are fueled by illegal drugs and substance abuse. There is a lack of inpatient and outpatient programs, and timely referral to treatment is extremely rare. JCAP provides restrictive intervention that allows those in active addiction an opportunity to receive treatment in a secure, drug-free environment.

On release, with no appropriate or timely intervention, an individual in active addiction will likely commit further crimes to gain access to illegal drugs; put themselves, their family members, their children at risk; and/or drive impaired risking community safety. JCAP provides an opportunity to begin positive life changes and protects community safety.
