Four-Year-Old Airlifted from Pedestrian Involved Accident in Florence

UPDATE: Police report the victim passed away on Monday morning.

(Florence, Ky.) – Boone County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle injury accident involving a pedestrian early Sunday morning.

The accident took place on the Weaver Road overpass of Interstate 75 around 12:59 a.m.

The initial investigation shows that a vehicle was traveling westbound on Weaver Road when her vehicle struck a pedestrian which had walked into the roadway from the right shoulder.

Lifesaving measures were attempted on scene by responding deputies and Florence Fire Department, and the four-year-old victim was airlifted to Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say while the vehicle was traveling on the overpass the driver noticed a vehicle had stopped in the eastbound lane of travel and was flashing headlights at her – which prompted the driver to slow their vehicle down to approximately 30 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.

The vehicle that had stopped had just passed through the area and observed the child standing at the edge of the roadway on the overpass unsupervised, had turned around and stopped in traffic to make contact with the child when the collision occurred.

According to a news release, the driver did not observe the child walk into the roadway due to the night conditions and the roadway being unlit. She did remain on the scene and has been cooperating with the investigation.

It was determined the child left a nearby residence on Mission Lane after his family had gone to sleep for the evening.

No charges have been filed at this time.
