House Committee Approves Smoking Ban

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - A statewide smoking ban is starting to move through the Indiana Statehouse.

The House Health Committee approved the measure to ban smoking in bars and most public places Tuesday on a 9-3 vote.

Private clubs, casinos, retail tobacco shops and cigar and hookah bars would be exempt. Only the gaming floors of the state’s 13 casinos would be exempt.

The bill now heads to the full House where it could ear approval this week before moving on to the Senate.

Lawmakers have tried several times in recent years to pass a smoking ban, but this year Governor Mitch Daniels says he also wants to see it get done.
