INDIANAPOLIS – Local community members are encouraged to get rid of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs this weekend.

Indiana State Police are partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for the 21st nationwide Prescription Drug Take Back initiative.

Collection sites will be set up nationwide on Saturday, October 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs which will be properly disposed of without threat to the environment.

The program is for liquid and pill medications. Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken.

The service is free and anonymous with no questions asked.

Local collections sites include:

  • Hamiton County Sheriff’s Office, 9940 New Haven Road, Harrison, OH
  • Boone County Sheriff’s Office, 3000 Conrad Lane, Burlington, KY
  • Florence Police Department, 7685 Mall Road and 8100 Ewing Blvd., Florence, KY
  • Indiana State Police, 902 South Adams Street, Versailles, IN

The Drug Take Back initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. According to the DEA, medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse.

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – pose both potential safety and health hazards.

The Drug Take Back events are a safe, popular, and responsible way for the public to legally dispose of prescription drugs with no questions asked.
