Memorial Day Observances Across Eagle Country

Take some time this weekend to remember those who gave their lives for our country.

Eagle Country 99.3 is proud to salute our U.S. military veterans and their brothers and sisters who have died in the line of duty.

Here is a list of local Memorial Day observances around the tri-state.

Friday, May 25

Dillsboro, Ind. - The Dillsboro Community Partnership and the Northcutt-Laaker American Legion Post have partnered to put on a Veterans Walk at Oakdale Cemetery. Signs along the trail pay tribute to veterans and military personnel from Clay and Caesar Creek Townships in Dearborn County. The Memorial Walk is free and open each day, May 25 through May 28, from sunrise to sunset.

Milan, Ind. - The Milan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6234, 107 N. Warpath Drive, is holding an observance at the post from 5:45-6:30 p.m. Former U.S. Navy expeditionary warfare specialist David Vinup will be the featured speaker. The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Flying Tigers Squadron will present a 21-gun salute and Indiana Patriot Guard Riders will be special guests. Dinner will be served at the VFW following the ceremony.

 

Sunday, May 27

Dillsboro, Ind. - Northcutt-Laaker American Legion Post will hold Memorial Day services at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro at 1:00 p.m. and St. John Cemetery in Farmers Retreat at 3:00.

Hidden Valley, Ind. – Hidden Valley Riders are holding a ceremony at the HVL Veterans Memorial starting at noon. The memorial is located between Willie’s Sports Café and the soccer fields. A parade will start there at about 12:45. All motorcycles, golf carts, and vehicles are welcome to participate in the parade.

 

Monday, May 28

Aurora, Ind. – A Memorial Day service will be held at Riverview Cemetery, 3635 E. Laughery Creek Road, starting at 11:00 a.m. Lawrenceburg resident and Army veteran Brett Bondurant will deliver an address.

Batesville, Ind. - Prell-Bland American Legion Post 271 firing squad and Batesville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3183 honor guard will hold brief memorial ceremonies at six cemeteries. The schedule includes Holy Family Cemetery in Oldenburg at 8:00 a.m., Saint Anthony Cemetery in Morris at 8:30, Saint Mark Cemetery at 9:00, Saint John Cemetery in Huntersville at 9:30, Saint Louis Cemetery/Methodist Cemetery at 10:00, and an observance at Batesville’s Liberty Park at 11:00 a.m.

Brookville, Ind. – The 100th Brookville America Legion Memorial Day Parade will start at 9:00 a.m. at St. Michael Cemetery. It will proceed to the Old Brookville Cemetery, Purple Heart Monument, Sixth Street Bridge and Maple Grove Cemetery. A short memorial service will be held at each stop. The service at Maple Grove Cemetery will feature a firing squad, the playing of “Taps”, an invocation, a barbershop quartet performance, prayers, and a keynote speech by West Point graduate Gordon Wade Urban.

Cleves, Oh. – The Cleves Memorial Day Parade will begin on Mt. Nebo Road and continue onto Cooper Road starting at 9:30 a.m.

Florence, Ky. – The City of Florence is putting on a Memorial Day Parade. It starts at 10:00 a.m. at Boone County High School, 7056 Burlington Pike, then continues to Ewing Boulevard. It will end at the Florence Government Center, where an observance will be held starting at 11:00 a.m.

Harrison, Oh. – The Harrison Memorial Day Parade will begin at Harrison Elementary School, 230 S Elm Street, starting at 10:00 a.m. It will proceed to Glen Haven Cemetery where a memorial service will be held.

Lawrenceburg, Ind. - The Lawrenceburg American Legion has organized a Memorial Day Parade. Staging will begin at the Dearborn County Courthouse at 9:00 a.m. The parade will start at 10:00, proceeding up Walnut Street. Following the parade, a brief Memorial Day service will be held at the Greendale Cemetery starting at approximately 11:00.

Miamitown, Oh. – The Miamitown Memorial Day Parade will begin at the Miamitown Elementary School parking lot at noon. A memorial ceremony will be held at the end of the parade.

Rising Sun, Ind. – The Rising Sun American Legion will put on a Memorial Day Parade starting at 10:00 a.m. at the mill lot on Poplar Street. The parade will proceed to the Ohio County Courthouse for a ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. Lunch will be available at the Rising Sun American Legion immediately following the ceremony.

St. Leon, Ind. – St. Leon American Legion Post 464 will have several services at area cemeteries. Cemetery route: St. Joseph Cemetery at 8:00 a.m., St. John Cemetery in Harrison at 8:30, St. Jacob Church Blue Creek at 9:05; St. Peter Church at 9:45; Klemmes Corner North at 10:00; Southgate at 10:15; Cedar Grove Catholic at 10:30; Cedar Grove Old Cemetery at 10:45. Refreshments will be served at 11:10 a.m. at the Cedar Grove Firehouse. Afternoon cemetery visits include Old Stone Churc on State Road 46 at 1:30 p.m., Mt. Pleasant in Logan Township at 2:00, and Old Sunman Family Cemetery at 2:30.

Vevay, Ind. – Vevay VFW Post 5396 will hold a special Memorial Day service at the Veterans Memorial on the Switzerland County Courthouse lawn starting at 11:00 a.m. Featured speakers will be retired Colonel Barbara Davidson and retired Lt. Col. August Dauel. The VFW post will host a lunch following the ceremony. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held inside the Historic Hoosier Theater.
