(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Snowmaking is underway at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg on the first morning of December.
The ski area’s 240-plus snow machines were blowing snowflakes into the air and falling to the ski slopes-to-be through the night Wednesday into Thursday.
The opening of the 32nd ski season at one of the tri-state’s most popular tourist attractions always fluctuates depending on the cooperation of Mother Nature.
“It does look like there might be a night or two, maybe three, of moderate to mild snowmaking Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday night. At this point in the season we are full go. Any opportunity we get to make snow we will,” said Perfect North Slopes owner Chip Perfect in a snow report on the ski area’s website.
Perfect said snowmaking right now is a stockpiling effort.
As for when the slopes may open, it’s a waiting game. Perfect said the key ingredient is the season’s first major arctic front with temperatures in the upper 20’s.
“The reality is when we can have enough snow to make it white from top to bottom and have enough depth to support some adequate skiing then we’ll open,” said Perfect.
Perfect North had its first trial run snowmaking session of the season on November 17, but temperatures had simply been too warm for any more snowmaking until this week.
Perfect North Slopes typically opens in early- to mid-December with the season running through March.
There has been the occasional anomaly, however. In 2008, Perfect North opened around the Thanksgiving holiday.
The ski area draws about 300,000 visitors a year. There are nearly 1,000 employees during the ski season.
