S-D School Board Approves Traditional Calendar

(West Harrison, Ind.) - After much debate, a district-wide survey, and crowded meetings, a new school calendar has been approved for Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools.

The district had been considering adopting a balanced calendar for the 2012-2013 school year. The proposal would have had school starting the first week in August with a one week fall break and potential two week spring break.

District Superintendent Dr. Jeff Hendrix said the school board voted 4-0 Thursday evening to approve a more traditional calendar for next year. Three of the board members were not present.

“Students report on August 13.  Fall Vacation is October 18-19.  March 18-22 will be snow make-up days.  Spring Break is March 25-29.  The last student day is May 23 if no further snow make-up days are needed,” Hendrix said.

In an internet poll of Sunman-Dearborn district residents, teachers, students, and parents, more than 42 percent responded asking for an August 13 start date. Another 41 percent asked for an earlier start date of either August 1, 6, or 8. Other respondents were not sure.

Other southeast Indiana school districts will be on a balanced calendar next year, including Lawrenceburg, South Dearborn, Batesville, South Ripley, and Oldenburg Academy.
