(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Highpoint Health Charge Nurse Holly Fehr, RN, is the latest recipient of the DAISY Award at the hospital. She was nominated for the award by a grateful family whose loved one had suffered a cardiac event.
“I was very surprised that I was presented the award. Truthfully, I didn’t think the family would remember me specifically,” Miss Fehr admitted. “I’ve dreamed of getting a DAISY but I never thought that I’d actually receive one. It’s such a huge honor!”
DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation, located in Glen Ellen, California, recognizes nurses around the world for outstanding care and dedication to their patients.
The daughter of the patient’s family wrote the following message in her DAISY nomination form. “My dad suffered a cardiac event and Holly was very calm, caring and attentive to his needs and handled the situation with complete control. We were very thankful to have someone in charge with her years of experience and knowledge. We felt comforted knowing she was taking care of our dad and making sure he had every opportunity for recovery. Holly was more than accommodating to the family as well. A huge ‘thank you’ to Holly for all she did that evening during my dad’s scary event.”
Miss Fehr was honored at a ceremony at Highpoint Health in which her co-workers; her 4-year-old daughter, Nora; her mother, Jenny Awad; and her fiancé, Scott Karn, all attended. She was presented a certificate, a sculpture called “A Healer’s Touch,” and, of course, two bouquets of daisies. As part of the ceremony, everyone was served Cinnabon® rolls, a tradition with the DAISY Awards.
In July, Miss Fehr, of Lawrenceburg, will have worked for Highpoint Health/Dearborn County Hospital for 25 years. She cared for residents in the hospital’s Subacute Unit before coming to the Med/Surg Unit 11 years ago. “Working in Med/Surg offers a great opportunity to gain a more in-depth knowledge of a wide range of clinical care and treatment protocols,” she said. “I feel like I’m always learning something new.”
Highpoint Health’s Medical/Surgical Unit also received a large banner to hang at the nurses’ station for three months recognizing Miss Fehr’s achievement.
