John L. Wallace received the Distinguished Hoosier Award for his service.
INDIANAPOLIS - State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon) Tuesday presented former Madison Chief of Police John L. Wallace with a Distinguished Hoosier Award for his 37 years of service in law enforcement.
Zimmerman, who presented the award during a Madison City Council meeting, said Wallace received the award for his outstanding dedication and commitment to Madison and Jefferson County.
"John dedicated his career to serving and protecting our local communities, and we're incredibly grateful for his and his families sacrifices all along the way," said Zimmerman, member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee. "While it is a tremendous loss to not have him as part of our law enforcement team, I wish him and his family nothing but the best moving forward."
Wallace announced his retirement in December and ended his career in law enforcement in January. During his time in law enforcement, he worked as a patrol officer, detective, sheriff and school resource officer before becoming Madison's chief of police. Wallace currently serves as president of the Madison Consolidated Schools Board of Trustees.
The Distinguished Hoosier Award is one of the highest awards given to Indiana citizens by the governor. It is awarded to those who distinguish themselves by significant contributions to their communities, and whose qualities and actions endear them in the hearts and minds of Hoosiers.
