(Rising Sun, Ind.) - The community is throwing a party to help out the family of a Switzerland County High School football player critically injured in a game.

On October 6, 2017, Colton Schirmer broke his neck in a game against North Decatur. The injury fractured his fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae and left him unable to feel or move his legs.

Schirmer was flown to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, where he spent the next six weeks recovering from surgery.

On Saturday, March 2, the Ohio County Historical Museum in Rising Sun will host the Colton Strong Benefit from noon until 5:00 p.m. The event will include soups, desserts, and a silent auction.

All proceeds will help Schirmer's family offset medical expenses.

If you can't make it to the benefit, but still want to help the Schirmer family with a donation, contributions are accepted on a GoFundMe page.
