Update published Thursday, March 10:
Due to the potential for inclement weather on Friday night and into Saturday, the Logan Clean-Up has been postponed to Saturday, March 19.
Original story published Tuesday, March 8:
(Dearborn County, Ind.) - For many years on the second Saturday in March, the Logan area has been the site of an extensive litter clean-up project led by the Volpenhein family and friends on Whites Hill Road. This year’s cleanup is set for Saturday morning, March 12, and volunteers and side-by-side vehicles are needed. Volunteers are asked to meet at 8 a.m. at Logan Supermart on North Dearborn Road, to bring heavy-duty trash bags, trash pickers and gloves, and to wear high-visibility (bright yellow or orange) clothing.
Dearborn County Commissioners approved the closure of Whites Hill Road from Gaynor Ridge Road to State Road 46 from 8:30-10 a.m., and the Harrison Hill portion of North Dearborn Road (Bell Arbor to Pinhook) from 10 a.m.-12 noon. The road closures were requested by Celeste Calvitto, founder and chair of the Dearborn County Anti-Litter Initiative (facebook.com/DearbornCountyAntiLitterInitiative/). Calvitto said that Dearborn County Sheriff’s Department deputies will be on hand for traffic control, and the Dearborn County Highway Department will be assisting with signage and collection.
For questions or more information on the March 12 Logan clean-up, call Adam Volpenhein at 513-383- 2018, and visit the Dearborn County Anti-Litter Initiative Facebook page for updates and information on future planned clean-ups. Calvitto said that as of now, other major clean-ups include:
- Saturday, April 2 -- State Line Hill, between the 2 entrances to Augusta Drive, 9 a.m.-12 noon. Sugar Ridge residents Rich Martin and Denny Mercurio are again helping the Dearborn County Anti-Litter Initiative to organize, with support from Sugar Ridge Golf Club. Augusta Drive will be the detour. Please drive safely through this residential area.
- Saturday, April 23 -- Bond Road and parts of Salt Fork/Jackson Ridge in Bright. Both locations, 9-11:30 a.m. Bright Fire & EMS will be organizing the clean-ups, as they have done for many years.
- Saturday, May 7, Yorkridge Road Hill to Fox Road, 9 a.m.-12 noon. York Township Trustee Greggory Callahan is helping to organize for the third year in a row.
There will be road closures during the clean-ups. Thank you to the Dearborn County Sheriff's Office for keeping our volunteers safe and to the Dearborn County Highway Department for their assistance with the clean-ups.
More details on these events will be posted at facebook.com/DearbornCountyAntiLitterInitiative/. If interested in volunteering, please comment or send a message.
This will help to make sure there are enough supplies -- trash bags and trash-pickers will be provided for the April and May events.
