(Boone County, Ky.) – Three people from southeastern Indiana and a man from Hebron, Kentucky was involved in a fatal accident on Monday afternoon.
Boone County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the three-vehicle collision on westbound Interstate 275 around 1:52 p.m.
Through the investigation, deputies discovered that Justin Cole, 35, of Hebron, was traveling in the right lane on I-275 and was traveling directly behind a vehicle driven by Randy Yelton, 70, of Aurora. In front of Yelton’s vehicle was a UPS delivery van operated by Ryan Weinle, 39, of Moores Hill.
As they neared the 5.6 mile marker, where traffic was slowing due to a separate collision, Cole collided with the rear of Yelton’s vehicle. That impact caused Yelton’s vehicle to strike the UPS van. Yelton and Cole’s vehicles then collided with the guardrail.
As a result of the crash, Randy Yelton sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to UC Medical Center for treatment. His passenger, Kristina Yelton, 67, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, where she was later pronounced deceased.
Cole and Weinle did not sustain any injuries.
Deputies believe inattention was a contributing factor, however, no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
The crash remains under investigation.
