Bill Shields Underage Drinkers Seeking Help

(Indianapolis, Ind.) – Underage drinkers would not have to worry about being arrested if they have to call 911 for help during an alcohol-related emergency, a bill in the Indiana legislature proposes.

The House voted 95-0 on in favor of the Senate Bill 274 this week. Because amendments were made in the House, the bill will be kicked back to the Senate for consideration before possibly going to the governor’s desk.

The proposal gives an individual immunity from arrest on public intoxication and minor possession or consumption charges when that person acts to get help for someone in need of emergency medical help.

Rep. Jud McMillin (R-Brookville) is among the bill’s sponsors.

“It’s really good public policy to help people make good decisions and stick around and help,” McMillin said.
