Spiritual Wellness makes up one of the eight SAMHSA Dimensions of Wellness.
(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Through a general wellness campaign, Community Mental Health Center, Inc., Lawrenceburg, has focused on providing information about all Eight Dimensions of Wellness.
One of the eight dimensions is Spiritual Wellness.
The Spiritual Dimension of Wellness is defined by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as, “a broad concept that represents one’s personal beliefs and values and involves having meaning, purpose, and a sense of balance and peace. It includes recognizing our search for meaning and purpose in human existence, and developing an appreciation for life and the natural forces that exist in the universe.”
The CMHC says there are different ways to explore this dimension including:
- Making time for practices that enhance your sense of connection to self, nature, others, and your belief in a higher power. Such practices may include prayer, meditation, and reflection.
- Discovering what values, principles, and beliefs are most important to you
- Finding a community whose spiritual outlook you share
- Helping others when they are in need, with activities such as volunteering, to give of yourself, your talent and your treasures to make a difference in someone’s life
“Our spiritual wellness is fundamental to our being as we look at our sense of purpose and meaning in life,” said CMHC Executive Director Tom Talbot. “I suggest that everyone make time for practices that enhance your sense of connection to self, nature, and others.”
“It is always good to reflect on what values, principles, and beliefs are most important to you,” Talbot said.
Developing spiritual awareness is beneficial for all ages.
As children develop their spiritual awareness, they need to be engaged. All family members can help children to reflect on their families' spiritual practices.
