(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) – A local police detective will head to a global competition in Ireland next month.

Jeremy Shepherd is a detective with the Lawrenceburg Police Department. He says he will travel to Belfast on Saturday, August 3 to compete in the bench press at the 2013 World Police & Fire Games.

The annual event gives full- and part-time police officers, firemen and woman, military personnel, and court officers from around the world to go against one another in 56 events ranging from softball and cycling to a triathlon and bowling. The World Police & Fire Games expects some 10,000 competitors.

“It’s such a blessing to be able to represent my police department, State of Indiana, and country,” Shepherd said.

Jeremy has competed all year in preparation for the world games, including the most recent Ohio Police & Fire Games where he posted a gold medal bench press of 335 pounds. During the 2011 World Police & Fire Games in New York City, Shepherd placed 4th out of 34 in the world.

His children, Ebony, Asia, and Trinity, have spent hours with him in the gym each week. In addition to his family, Shepherd feels his friends and community are behind him.

“I want to thanks my Chief (Gene Hunefeld) and Assistant Chief (Mike Lanning) for allowing me the time off of work and time to train. I want to thank my City Council for the funds to travel to Ireland and believing in me,” he said.
