By Mike Perleberg (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - A Lawrenceburg native says he will captain the newest riverboat to be based on the Ohio River in the tri-state. Joseph Baer says the Grand Majestic Riverboat will be officially christened in Covington, Kentucky on September 23. The 70-passenger stern-wheeler will offer 7- to 21-night cruises on the Ohio River, Mississippi River, and others. "Our guests leave the fast-paced world behind and experience life at a slower pace as the river banks of America’s countryside move by," said Baer, who now lives in Taylor Mill, Ky. "Our luxury service, tours and top entertainment will sweep you away to the when steamboats ruled the rivers with the grace and majesty only seen on the Mississippi Ohio River by steamboats." The riverboat will offer passengers a unique experience, luxury service, exciting river routes, and fully customizable itineraries for groups. Grand Majestic will be the first overnight riverboat cruise company based in the Cincinnati area since the Delta Queen stopped the service in the 1980s. Captain Baer grew up on the river. At age 11 he started helping around his family’s marina, Cast-A-Ways Yacht Club, in Florence, Indiana. He started at Queen City Riverboats at age 16 and then McGinnis Towing at age 19. He attended Great Lakes Maritime Academy in Traverse City, Michigan. The company was co-founded with his wife, Victoria.
