(Greendale, Ind.) – The armed robbery suspect who was shot by a Greendale Police officer has been released from the hospital. Richard McCracken had been hospitalized at University of Cincinnati Medical Center since the night of July 1, when he was shot twice by the officer who apprehended him shortly after committing an armed robbery at the Burger King restaurant in Greendale. The 30-year-old Lawrenceburg resident is currently behind bars at the Hamilton County Justice Center in Cincinnati, Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles tells Eagle Country 99.3. Jail records indicate he was booked into jail on Sunday afternoon. McCracken is awaiting extradition back to Indiana to face charges including Robbery (level 2 felony), Attempted Aggravated Battery (level 3 felony), Theft Over $750 (level 6 felony), three counts of Kidnapping (level 3 felony), and four counts of Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon (level 5 felony) According to court documents, McCracken was armed with a large knife when he approached employees outside of the Burger King restaurant on U.S. 50 late Friday night, July 1 as the restaurant was closing. He allegedly chased and grabbed one employee by the collar as she attempted to run from the restaurant, dragging her back into the restaurant. An Eagle Country 99.3 on-air personality was in the restaurant and witnessed part of the stick-up. McCracken allegedly forced the employees to open the locked door and open a safe. McCracken fled with a box of money, but not before he seriously injured a female hiding beneath a car by kicking her leg. He ran across U.S. 50 and disappeared over the river levee into a wooded area. Greendale Police Office Joseph Vance was being assisted in the search for McCracken by a Greendale firefighter equipped with a thermal imaging camera. The camera detected a mass of heat in some bushes, which Vance found to be McCracken. When Vance ordered the suspect to surrender, McCracken allegedly came out of the bushes towards the office with the knife raised above his head and in position to stab. As McCracken advanced towards the officer, Vance used his service firearm to shoot him in the shoulder. McCracken allegedly got back up and again came at Vance, who fired a second shot which hit him in the leg and ended the attack. A 12-year veteran of the Greendale Police Department, Vance was placed on administrative leave as part of the department’s standard operating procedure following the police action shooting as Indiana State Police investigated the shooting. No department administrators were available Monday to provide an update on Vance's status. Wheeles said Monday that the ISP investigation into the shooting has concluded and the findings have been turned over to the Dearborn-Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office for review. The Greendale Police Department was conducting its own investigation into the armed robbery.
