(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - A Lawrenceburg High School wrestler can call her freshman season a success. Elena Thatcher captured third place in the 132 pound weight class at the Indiana High School Girls Wrestling State Championships on Friday, January 19 at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. She went 2-1 in the tournament featuring more than 130 female wrestlers from across the state. Elena came in second at a regional tournament to earn the state finals appearance. “She has worked hard in the wrestling room and continues to work hard and maintain a great attitude and spirit about her and the sport,” says Jeremy Shepherd, one of Elena’s coaches. Elena has been wrestling for four years. Her father, Mike Thatcher, says she started in Lawrenceburg’s youth wrestling program and has stuck with it to become a member of the LHS wrestling team. “Most of the time she gets to wrestle boys, but it’s great when she takes on girls because they can’t match her strength,” Mike said.
