(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Who are all those people on the walls around the new Civic Park?

Lawrenceburg Main Street and the City of Lawrenceburg are excited to announce our participation in the Inside Out Project.   Over 170 large-scale photos of Lawrenceburg community members will be on view on the buildings that surround the park during the month of June 2019. The photos will be lit up at night through June 7th .

Inside Out was created by the TED prize winning, street artist, JR.  This global art initiative is a large-scale, participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work.  In celebration of the vibrant community that thrives here in Lawrenceburg, Main Street registered a group action with the Inside Out Project and invited everyone who lives, works or plays here to participate by attending one of four photo sessions conducted back in March & April.

The new park is a community gathering space and serves as a beacon of Lawrenceburg’s dedication to the creation of an inclusive community where everyone, young or old, progressive or conservative, life-long or new resident can Live, Work and Play together. When visitors and community members see our Inside Out images, we hope that they will join our celebration of Lawrenceburg’s most vital community asset – our people. ABOUT THE INSIDE OUT PROJECT :  Inside Out is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images are made into posters and sent back to the projectʼs co-creators, for them to exhibit in their own communities. Posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window, to a wall of an abandoned building, or in a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and be made available online at http://www.insideoutproject.net/.

The INSIDE OUT project is a creation of the artist JR, recipient of the 2011 TED Prize (watch JR's TED talk here). ABOUT THE TED PRIZE The TED Prize is awarded annually to an exceptional individual who receives $1,000,000 and the TED community’s resources and expertise to spark global change. The award offers support to build a project's core infrastructure quickly - so that others can add their own collaborative action. The first TED Prize was awarded in 2005, born out of the TED Conference and a vision by the world's leading entrepreneurs, innovators, and entertainers to change the world - one Wish at a time. What began as an unparalleled experiment to leverage the resources of the TED Community to spur global change has evolved into one of the most prestigious prizes. A TED Prize winner is a rare and powerful combination of someone who knows how to capture the imaginations and make a measurable impact, a visionary and a pragmatist, a dreamer and a doer. From Bono’s the ONE Campaign (’05 recipient) to Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution (’10 recipient) and JR’s Inside Out Project (’11 recipient), the TED Prize has helped to combat poverty, take on religious intolerance, improve global health, tackle child obesity, advance education, and inspire art around the world. The Inside out Project:  Celebrating the Evolution of Rural America

Lawrenceburg, Indiana Civic Park

The goal of participating in this global art initiative is to celebrate the Lawrenceburg community and foster conversation between residents, business owners and civic leaders about what is best for the future of our small town.

Despite the economic and demographic challenges faced by most rural American towns, Lawrenceburg has continued to discover creative opportunities for growth and development.  By focusing on the assets that make our town a unique and desirable place to live, we have created our own mini-renaissance. However, change does not always come easily for small rural communities.

Our Inside Out posters will be placed on the historic buildings that surround our new civic park.  This community gathering space serves as a beacon of Lawrenceburg’s dedication to the creation of an inclusive community where everyone, young or old, progressive or conservative, life-long or new resident can Live, Work and Play together. When visitors and community members see our Inside Out images, we hope that they will join our celebration of rural America’s most vital community asset – our people.
