(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - A new grocery shopping option for Dearborn County families will open later this month. Supersaver IGA will welcome customers for the first time on Friday, May 26 at the Dearborn Plaza on U.S. 50/Eads Parkway. The store will be the fourth under owner Eric Rabe. The northern Kentucky resident opened his first IGA in Vevay in 2012. Eric Rabe became interested in the store last year. He signed a lease and got to work remodeling the vacant former Kroger space. Shelves and signage are set up, and crews are working almost around the clock to have the groecery ready for the public this month. “Lawrenceburg is fantastic.” Rabe, a 44-year veteran of the grocery industry, tells Eagle Country 99.3. “The quality of the people has been just fantastic. I’ve been in a lot of towns and Lawrenceburg is unique. It has a small town feel, but it’s a large town with a sense of community.” The store will employ between 55 and 60 people when it opens, ranging from students to World War II veterans, says Rabe. The independent grocery will also become the long-sought anchor store for the Dearborn Plaza since Kroger left in 2008. At 36,500-square-feet, it will be among the largest IGA’s in the country. Supersaver IGA will feature “stores within a store” with local businesses like Batesville-based Kate’s Bulk Food selling bulk quantities, including organic and non-GMO food. DJ’s Bakery, of Bright, will sell doughnuts and other pastries in a small section of IGA. Deville’s Pharmacy is leasing space for a pharmacy and medical equipment supply store, complete with an outside walk-up window. Rabe hopes competitive prices, customer service, being locally-owned, and the meat department will help lure local shoppers. “We’re the only store in the area that cuts all the meat fresh,” says Rabe. Rabe’s store will also brag a 20-foot salad bar, a grinder that allows shoppers to make their own peanut butter, and a meat smoker. Still, the Supersaver IGA will be a throwback in some ways, including a noticeable lack of self-checkout lanes. “I never liked those. We’ll bag your groceries for you,” says Rabe.
