Lows Coming Back To Coach SDHS Football

Eric Lows

South Dearborn High School

(Aurora, Ind.) – The successor to Eric Lows as the head football coach at South Dearborn High School is Eric Lows.

In a widely unexpected move Monday, the South Dearborn Community Schools Board of Trustees unanimously voted to bring back Lows as the Knights football for a fifth year.

Lows, who is also principal at Aurora Elementary School, had resigned from the coaching position in December, citing the competing demands of his principal’s job and duties as head coach.

As the board named Lows back as the head coach, parents attending the meeting questioned the message

“What kind of message does that send out kids? Is it alright to quit and come back?” the unidentified parent asked the board.

“Do we leave the program in limbo for another year?” another parent asked.

South Dearborn High School athletic director Brad Fentress stated that it is his understanding that Lows is coming back not as an interim solution, but for the long term.

Board member Terry Luhrsen asked Lows if coming back as coach was what he wanted to do.

“Absolutely,” Lows replied. “I wouldn’t have made the commitment if I didn’t feel like I could do the job and do it well.”

“We preach to our kids not to quit, in every sport that they play. In every facet of life,” the audience member stated. “But, now we’re acknowledging that it’s okay to do this.”

Lows said he does not believe he is sending that message to the student athletes.

“There are a couple players here. They know once I commit to doing something I commit to doing it and I’m going to see it through. They know by signing that letter and making that commitment I’m going to see it through and do the best job that I can,” said Lows.

Lows was an assistant principal at Aurora Elementary when he was first hired as football coach. Board president Darryl Cutter said the board revisited Lows’ coaching role each year.

“It worked well. Eric managed his time well. (In November) that was probably when it had the most stress on him, so he said, ‘Maybe I should step down.’ But, then after three or four months he more or less regathered his faculties, reconsidered, and that’s where we are at tonight,” Cutter said.

In his four previous years as South Dearborn head coach, Lows accumulated a career record of 20-21. The former Ball State University football captain guided the Knights to a 7-3 record in 2011, the program’s first winning season since 2004.

South Dearborn’s 2012 season begins August 17 at home against rival Lawrenceburg.
