(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - The Lauren’s Burg Hill 5 Mile and 5K race is keeping Lauren Hill’s legacy going by aiding families with children diagnosed with brain cancer.
The race held June 16 in memory of Lauren Hill raised $15,434 dollars for Lauren’s Fight for Cure, according to race organizer Mark Knigga. In four years, the race has raised a total of $59,157.
The money raised funds scholarships and provides financial assistance to families impacted by pediatric brain cancer, the same condition which led to Lauren’s passing at age 19. Hill died in April 2015, only about a year after graduating from Lawrenceburg High School and persevering through a terminal brain cancer diagnosis to achieve her dream of playing college basketball for Mount St. Joseph University.
Knigga thanked the 67 people who ran in this year’s five mile race and 189 5K runners and walkers, as well as others who made the race happen.
“This event would not be possible without the support from the City of Lawrenceburg, Lawrenceburg Community Schools, Paul H. Rohe Co., our financial partners and volunteers. Please be sure to thank our sponsors and support their business,” Knigga told participants.
Going toward the fundraising total were $100 donations from Pat Seevers and Bob Weissmann. The two participants in the Southeastern Indiana Racing Circuit were randomly selected for $100 prizes, which they donated back to Laurens’ Fight For Cure.
Knigga says the 5th annual Lauren’s Burg Hill race is already being planned for June 15, 2019.
