Safe Passage: October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October 21 is National Wear Purple Day.

(Batesville, Ind.) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Safe Passage, Inc. invites community members to join them in wearing purple on Thursday, October 21 for National Wear Purple Day.

The non-profit organization will also be placing purple ribbons, banners, electronic signage, radio/print ads, and social media posts bringing awareness to the issue.

Executive director Jane Yorn challenges community members to have one intentional conversation this month about Safe Passage or one of the stigma campaign topics.

“In the early days of Safe Passage, it was difficult for many people to believe that domestic violence was truly present in our beautiful, rural communities,” Yorn said in Safe Passage’s monthly newsletter. “We have come a long way in the understanding of how prevalent and complication domestic abuse truly is – but we certainly haven’t figured it all out. Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the new statewide stigma reduction campaign is the perfect time for everyone to take their knowledge one step further.”

The #INAgainstDA campaign breaks away from many domestic violence campaigns by turning its focus from survivors of domestic abuse and violence to bystanders and the community at large.

Laura Berry, Executive Director of ICADV, says everyone has a part in ending the stigma around domestic abuse.

“There is a misconception that leaving the situation is the first step; the reality for many survivors is much more complicated,” Berry added. “This campaign challenges those beliefs and calls on bystanders to learn more about the nuances around domestic abuse and the resources available.”
