Sen. Nugent Promotes ‘Black, White & Read’

Press release from Sen. Johnny Nugent

Sen. Johnny Nugent

(Indianapolis, Ind.) - State Sen. Johnny Nugent (R-Lawrenceburg) recently led the Indiana General Assembly in promoting Dearborn County’s year-long literacy program, “Black, White and Read.”

Nugent introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 11 to the full Senate on Thursday, Feb. 9. His initiative honors Dearborn County for facilitating “healthy families” by developing life and literacy skills and also recognizes the General Assembly’s support of the community program.

Black, White and Read kicked off in January featuring two classic novels: “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald for high school students and adults to read and “Black Beauty” by Anna Sewell for younger children and families to enjoy.

“I applaud Dearborn County leaders for their dedication to literacy and encourage other Indiana communities to follow in their footsteps,” Nugent said. “Reading programs like this one not only encourage families to spend more time together — but also people from all over the local area. Book discussions can bring Hoosiers from many different backgrounds together while improving and encouraging literacy.”

Nugent added that several local groups have been key to the early success of Black, White & Read efforts — The Hoosier Hills Literacy League, Aurora Public Library District, Dearborn Highlands Arts Council, Friends of the Lawrenceburg Public Library, Ivy Tech Community College and Lawrenceburg Public Library District.
