(Ripley County, Ind.) – No injuries were reported but an SUV was destroyed after being struck by a train.

Ripley County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Allen’s Crossing at Railroad Road and Country Road 200 N just outside of Osgood on Friday around 10:30 p.m.

Deputies say a 17-year-old male from Sunman was operating the SUV when he misjudged the crossing due to heavy rainfall and got the vehicle stuck on the tracks.

The driver and his passengers tried to get the vehicle off the tracks but were unsuccessful. Approximately five minutes after getting stuck, the vehicle was struck by a CSX freight train.

Anyone who finds themselves or someone else struck on railroad tracks should immediately evacuate and dial 911.

The Ripley County Sheriff's Office says dispatchers can quickly contact the railroad dispatchers and stop or slow oncoming trains.

Assisting at the scene was Osgood Police, Indiana State Police, Ripley County Emergency Medical Services, and AJ’s Auto Body.
