(Harrison, Oh.) - Members of a Harrison church gathered yesterday to remember a 16-year-old car crash victim.
Kayla Duerler died in a wreck on Millville Road in Butler County on Wednesday.
Her grandparents were riding with her and were hospitalized with serious injuries. According to family, they are in stable condition.
Duerler was the daughter of the leaders at LifeSpring Community Church in Harrison, Jeff and Julie Duerler. That’s where a vigil was held Thursday, with friends and church members sharing memories of the student ministry leader and prayers she had written.
“I need you, Lord. I need your wisdom. I need your words. Use me as your mouthpiece to say what you want me to say. And after I’ve spoken with them, move in their hearts use every painful experience, every heartbroken moment to mold them into the person you want them to be,” Kayla wrote in her prayer journal.
A message from her father was shared on the Remembering Kayla Duerler Facebook page:
Kayla also ran a secret YouTube channel called “Skye Marie.” Those who knew her can remember her by watching her book reviews. In one video, she exhibits her sense of humor in answering the question “Why do you love reading?”
“It’s a way to escape from the world. It’s like going on an adventure, but it doesn’t cost any money. Unless you buy the books, then it does cost money,” she quips.
Duerler was about to enter her junior year at Harrison High School. She had just been named a drum major in the marching band. According to her obituary, she also participated in drama club and achieved high academic honors.
A memorial service for Kayla will be held at the Harrison High School Activity Center on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The family is asking that memorial contributions be made to the Harrison Music Boosters or LifeSpring Community Church TRANSFORM.
