With EC expected to make a deep run in the postseason, all three should have their record breaking moment.
Josh Ringer, Cole Burton and Ryan Brotherton.
(St. Leon, Ind.) – Three East Central High School football stars are on the brink of setting new schools records at their respective positions.
Entering the first week of the IHSAA State Tournament, Josh Ringer, Cole Burton, and Ryan Brotherton are just a handful of big plays away from setting new school records for career rushing yards, career passing touchdowns, and career receiving touchdowns.
Senior running back Josh Ringer has been chasing Andrew Wolf’s career rushing yards total all season long. After a 136-yard performance in a blowout win over Roncalli, Ringer now has 5,445 career rushing yards. That puts only 264 yards away from breaking Wolf’s record of 5,708 yards (1991-94).
Ringer, a Miami (Oh.) commit, is averaging 187.2 yards per game this season. With the Trojans expected to make another deep run in the state tournament, Ringer is poised to break the EC career rushing record before the Trojans theoretically hoist the Sectional Championship trophy.
Ringer already holds school records for most career points (564 and counting), career rushing touchdowns (88 and counting), rushing touchdowns in a season (39, 2022), most rushing touchdowns in a game (6), and most points scored in a game (36).
With 216 points scored this season, Ringer has a shot to break his previous record for points scored (252) which he set during his junior season. He is also on pace to break the record for best rushing average set by Eric Rosemeyer (9.5 YPC, 2018). Ringer is currently averaging 11.5 yards per carry.
Senior quarterback Cole Burton tossed three touchdown passes against Roncalli last Friday, bringing his career total to 55. Burton needs only two more TD passes to surpass TJ Brown’s career record of 56 (2000-03).
Burton is also on pace to break head coach Jake Meiners’ highest completion percentage record in a season, which is 69 percent. The senior signal caller is currently completing 70 percent of his passes.
Perhaps Burton’s next TD pass will go to his favorite target Ryan Brotherton. If and when Brotherton secures another touchdown reception, it will be a school record 28th touchdown reception. Brotherton is currently tied with Dan Hartman (1999-01) on the TD receptions list. He needs four more TD receptions to set the season record, also held by Hartman (14).
East Central will host Shelbyville in the first round of sectional play on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
