Three Advance to First-Ever IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Finals

(Lawrenceburg, Ind.) - Three area wrestlers have punched their ticket to the State Finals. 

The inaugural IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Tournament rolled on Friday with four regionals across the state. Several area wrestlers competed at the Alexandria-Monroe and Mooresville regionals. 

Milan junior Kayla Roell, East Central senior Leighna Prater, and Switzerland County junior Klaire Redwine have each qualified for the state finals. 

Roell won the regional championship in the 120-pound bracket at Alexandria-Monroe. She defeated Marion junior Alana Montgomery by fall (1:24). 

Prater fell by decision (4-1) in 145-pound regional championship at Alexandria-Monroe. Redwine dropped a semi-final matchup by decision (4-1) but bounced back to win third place by fall (4:05).

The top four place winners in each weight class advance to the state finals.

  • Isabella McEwen-Merritt (Franklin County) lost by fall (0:55) in 1st Round of 105 pound bracket
  • Tegan Caddell (East Central) lost by decision (20-13) in 2nd Round of 115 pound bracket
  • Shelby Dawson (East Central) lost by decision (11-9) in 1st Round of 135 pound bracket
  • Sage Leising (Franklin County) lost by fall (2:19) in 1st Round of 135 pound bracket
  • Lacie Lowe (Lawrenceburg) lost by fall (0:56) in 1st Round of 140 pound bracket
  • Lila Westerman (Franklin County) lost by fall (2:40) in 1st Round of 170 pound bracket

Other Mooresville Results: 

  • Miley Stroud (Switzerland County) lost by fall (1:39) in 1st Round of 145 pound bracket
  • Payton Stow (Switzerland County) lost by fall (1:33) in 1st Round of 110 pound bracket 

The IHSAA Girls Wrestling State Finals is scheduled for Friday, January 17 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds' Corteva Coliseum.
