(Aspen, Colo.) - Nick Goepper, who grew up skiing at Perfect North Slopes in Lawrenceburg, claimed his third consecutive gold medal in the men's ski slopestyle event at the Winter X Games on Saturday. The 20-year-old from Hidden Valley wasn't supposed to be competing in the medal round in Aspen on Saturday after finishing ninth in the elimination round on Thursday. However, another skier had to bow out due to a knee injury before the medal round, allowing Goepper second life in his three-peat attempt. Goepper made the most of the opportunity in a hurry. On the first run of the medal round, Goepper scored a phenomenal 93.66. The rest of the skiers attempted to catch up with the Olympic bronze medalist the rest of the competition, but the next best performance was a 90.66 by fellow U.S. Olympian Joss Christensen. Alex Bellemare earned the bronze. It's the first X Games slopestyle three-peat since 2004. "It's always nice to kind of have a 'one and done' and just get the first one out of the way so you don't have to worry about it. I would just have to worry about improving. That's what I wanted to do," Goepper said in a post competition interview with ESPN. Goepper dedicated the victory to U.S. Ski Team members Ronnie Berlack, 20, and Bryce Astle, 19. The two were killed in an avalanche while skiing in the Austrian Alps on January 5. The win is Goepper's fourth straight X Games podium appearance. In addition to now three straight golds, he earned silver in the 2012 competition.
