(St. Leon, Ind.) - The East Central Natatorium was on display to the public on Thursday evening.

An open house and dedication ceremony gave many area residents their first look at the beautiful new facility at East Central High School. The natatorium is part of a $54 million dollar buildings project throughout the entire school corporation.

The 499 seat natatorium will be used for swim meets, PE classes, swim lessons, and swim club. Plans are also in the works to allow public use, however, logistics with lifeguards and other safety measures have not been determined at this time. Superintendent Andrew Jackson tells Eagle Country 99.3 that senior citizen classes are also possible in the future.

When the plan for the natatorium came about, the hope was that East Central would be the host site for regional swim competitions. That will come to fruition this winter when East Central plays host to the boys swim sectional. Jackson says East Central will host swim sectionals on a rotational basis, every other year.

The first high school swim meet in the natatorium is scheduled for November 17 when Lady Trojan swimmers take to the pool.

The existing high school pool is being renovated into a multi-purpose physical education and fitness center for the middle school.

As part of the renovation, the special education room will double in size and a kitchen lab will be added for life skill lessons. Other areas of concentration include the agriculture room and choir and band rooms. Plus, restrooms will receive new finishes and fixtures between the cafeteria and the gym.

All work is expected to be completed over the next 12 months.

Next summer, North Dearborn and Sunman schools will see improvements completed in their office areas.

Other improvements completed as part of the buildings project include new flooring at all schools and new roofs at all schools except the middle school.
