Update published at 4:23 p.m.: Dearborn County's favorite Olympian won't have the opportunity to try for a third straight gold medal in the Winter X Games after he fell in his elimination round run Thursday. Nick Goepper was competing in the elemination round of the men's ski slopestyle event in Aspen, Colorado. Judges awarded him a 76.00 on his first run, good enough for 9th place out of 16 skiers. However, Goepper failed to improve his standing on his second run during which he missed a landing and received a score of 35.00. Only the top eight qualifiers advance to the medal round on Saturday. Goepper missed that mark by a point, behind fellow Olympic medalist Gus Kenworthy at 77.00. American Tom Wallisch earned the top score in Thursday's slopestyle qualifying at 89.66.   Original story published at 10:18 a.m.: (Aspen, Colo.) - Local Olympian Nick Goepper begins his defense as gold medalist at the Winter X Games on Thursday. Goepper, the Olympic bronze medalist raised in Hidden Valley, will compete in the men’s ski slopestyle eliminators at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado. The 20-year-old is trying to win the Winter X gold in that event for the third straight year. “People really bring out all the guns at the X Games because it’s been around so long and has such a history [with freeskiing],” said Goepper. “I think X Games is truly the world championship event of the season for freeskiers.” Among Goepper’s competition this week are Joss Christensen and Gus Kenworthy, the Americans who along with Goepper swept the podium in Sochi last February by winning the gold and silver medals, respectively. The elimination rounds from Buttermilk Mountain air on ESPN3 at 2:00 p.m. Thursday. The men’s ski slopestyle finals will be broadcast on ABC Saturday afternoon at 1:00.
